While attending SHS he played 3 sports, was in the Beta Club (National Honor Society), was a member in the school’s award-winning show choir and was a co-founder of the high school fraternity Alpha Kappa Omega (“Esquires”)
After high school he attended Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville North Carolina, where his original intent was to major in Pre-Med, but ultimately ended up with a degree in Business Administration and an education in how to successfully navigate through the challenges of attending an HBCU, with a dual major. While at FSU, he played football, pledged his beloved fraternity (Omega Psi Phi, Fraternity Incorporated), and held leadership roles in various organizations including the Student Government and FSU Board of Directors.
After college, he made professional stops in Atlanta Georgia and Norfolk Virginia before finally landing in Newark New Jersey; starting his career in the financial services industry. From there, he would go on to work for global industry giants including, Citibank, Wells Fargo, Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corp (HSBC), Deutsche Bank and finally J.P. Morgan Chase.
He leveraged certifications in Project Management, Disaster Recovery | Business Continuity and Regulatory Compliance to build a reputation as the go to guy and problem solver across multiple banking disciplines.
“Unconquerable Souls” his first fictional novel, released in April 2016, represented an unlikely but welcoming departure from the corporate structure that had defined most of his adult life; the semi-autobiographical tale of Malcolm X. Butler, was well received by its readers.
After the tragic death of his oldest son in July of 2016, Kevin retired as a 30+ year financial services professional and stepped away from promoting the novel in favor the healing and refocus required to deal with these dramatic life changes.
He is married to the lovely Terry Evans who still works in the financial services industry and is a successful clothing designer, with her own company, Fashions by Terry Evans. They share 2 wonderful sons, Malcolm (deceased) and 22-year-old Miles; Miles is a first-year student at The City University of New York (CUNY) Law School, in Long Island City, New York. They continue to make New Castle, Delaware their home.
Kevin’s post retirement life continued to bring successes; he is a life member of the Nu Upsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi (Wilmington Delaware) and the Masonic brotherhood (Mt. Pisgah #12), serving as the Grand Secretary for the Most Worshipful African Harmony Grand Lodge for the State of Delaware.
In addition, with over 10+ years of Non-Profit experience, he serves as the President of the Board of Directors of Nu Friendship Outreach, Inc., and SHS Charities Inc., an organization he established to provide scholarships, mentoring opportunities and emergency aid grants to students and graduates of Smithfield High School, in Smithfield Virginia.
2021 brought about new opportunities and challenges for Kevin; as the First African American male to qualify as a Registered Parliamentarian in the history of the Delaware State Association of Parliamentarians, he also recently served as its President.
The 2022 Release of “Bloodied but Unbowed” the sequel to “Unconquerable Souls” is Kevin’s homage to his son Malcolm, who’s compassion, empathy and kindness served as a light in the darkness of despair that followed his passing. His presence served as a compass of positivity that allowed him to complete this sequel and represents another step towards healing in the ongoing process of grieving and acceptance.
